HONOLULU BILL 80 PUTS OUR HEALTH AND JOBS AT RISK
Honolulu City Council is considering legislation that would make hotels unsafe by increasing human contact and exposure, against the advice of the CDC and public health experts. The legislation would also add increased costs for hotels already struggling to stay open that could force many of them to remain closed and lay off thousands of employees.

Hotel Jobs Are On The Line
The hotel industry is on the brink of collapse. Four in ten hotel employees are out of work and Honolulu’s unnecessary mandate will result in thousands more layoffs. Bill 80 will significantly delay reopening and cost tens of thousands of jobs and millions of dollars, likely forcing many hotels to close permanently.
BILL 80 GOES AGAINST ADVICE OF CDC AND HEALTH AGENCIES ON HOTEL HOUSEKEEPING
“Guestrooms occupied by the same customer over multiple days should not be cleaned daily, unless requested.” – CDC Guidelines
Guest and Employee Safety Is On The Line
Bill 80 would make hotels less safe and increase the exposure risk of both guests and employees by forcing daily housekeeping. This dangerous mandate contradicts CDC guidance and the advice of public health agencies. The CDC has clearly stated: “Guest rooms occupied by the same customer over multiple days should not be cleaned daily, unless requested.” Bill 80 also contradicts hotel guest preferences: 88% of frequent travelers want housekeeping “by request only” to feel more comfortable.
